IBS Solutions:

The following information is taken from the book : " The Digestive Health Solutions" wrote by a Nutritionist expert in the field .

1) FODMAP diet.

For those who suffer from IBS, the FODMAP diet is clinically approved to be remarkable effective to relive IBS symptoms.

In fact, a study comparing the FODMAP approach to the standard dietary advice for IBS issued by the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) showed that the FOODMAP approach was far better for symptom relief including pain, bloating and flatulence.

How does the following diet work?

The FOODMAP approach diet works by restricting carbohydrates that are easily fermented by gut bacteria and subsequently produce gas and distention. The same carbohydrate can also increase the water content of the bowel, further increasing distention and leading to diarrhea.

From a practical perspective the major carbohydrates that are restricted are free fructose (found in fruits and sweeteners), lactose (from diary foods, oligosaccharides (from vegetables and cereals) and polyols ( in fruits, vegetables and sweeteners). Foods that have highest levels of these FOODMAPS are restricted and substituted with low FOODMAP foods.

Another graphic explaining this in a better way :

2) Try a low- Carbohydrate diet:

This may be the cause of your symptoms, do not eliminate good cabs !!!, they are important!! specially if you are doing exercise, however by reducing it you can see if your symptoms get better.

3) Test for Fructose intolerance:

The following can be tested through hydrogen breath test , which involves drinking about 35 g of fructose and monitoring the amount of hydrogen gas on your breath repeatedly over the next 3 hours.

4) Get fast symptom relief with 5 natural medicines:

Explanation of why &how this 5 foods help IBS symptoms?

Peppermint Oil

How it works?

Peppermint oil has been shown to relax the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract , which explains its ability to reduce muscle spasms, cramping and pain. In fact, peppermint oil appears to be just as effective as muscle - relaxant drugs for people with IBS. Experimental studies have shown that peppermint oil also act as natural antibiotic against a range of bacteria including: Helicobacter pylori, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, so it may be that peppermint oil helps balance your gut bacteria by Killing off bad bugs too.

Clinical effect:

Peppermint oil has been shown to improve a wide range of symptoms including diarrhoea, bloating and constipation, but it is particularly effective for abdominal pain and discomfort.

Digestive Enzymes:

Each day , a normally functioning pancreas produces up to 2 litres of pancreatic juice, a concentrated source of enzymes that break down your food, especially fats. If your enzyme production is too low you can end up with nutrients deficiencies, malabsorption , pain and diarrhoea and , for this reason , digestive enzyme supplement have been used for several decades to treat a number of serious digestive diseases. Only recently have digestive enzyme supplements been shown to reduce symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

How it works?

When taken with a meal , digestive enzyme supplements increase the concentration of enzymes in your gut so you can brake down your food more effectively. Digestive enzymes improve IBS symptoms in people who are not digesting fats well.

In my blog article called "how to improve your digestion part 1" I wrote about possible digestive enzymes you can buy that are save and recommended by doctors. I believe this is useful because there is too many in the market and is important to learn which bran to take and not to take.

Artichoke leaf :

Artichoke ( Cynara Scolymus) is a common vegetable native to the Mediterranean. Although widely consumed as a vegetable, the leaves are a popular folk for digestive problems, in particular dyspepsia or heartburn.

How it works?

Artichoke leaf has been shown to act as an antispasmodic, reducing muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, the leaves have been shown to stimulate bile production. Bile is secreted into the digestive system by your gall bladder to help digest fats, so it may be that artichoke works in part by aiding digestion.

Clinical effect:

In people with IBS, artichoke had been shown to reduce abdominal pain, abdominal cramp, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea and constipation.

Herbal medicine mixture:

Plants have been used as medicines for thousands of years and are still widely used around the word today. Herbs contain a complex mixture of bioactive compounds making them different from pharmaceutical drugs. In traditional herbal therapy often a number of herbs are combines to increase the effects of the treatment.

Recent studied had shown that the following herbs are beneficial for the digestive health:

-Peppermint ( Mentha piperita)

-Chamomile ( Anthemis Nobilis)

-Licorice( Glycyrrhiza glabra)

- Atractylodes ( a chinese herb)

-Orange peel and lrdebouriella root ( ledebouriella divaricata)

-Mint ( mentha longifolia)

-Nut grass ( Cyperus rotundus)

How it works?

Research has demonstrated that herbal mixtures can reduce pain and act as an anti-spasmodic reducing muscle spasms and cramps, improve gastrointestinal transit, which may improve diarrhoea and/or constipation , regulate gastric acid production and thus relieve dyspepsia, as well as having anti-inflammatory effects.

Aloe vera

The aloe ( Aloe vera) plant has triangulat gel - filled leaves which have been used as a medicine for thousands of years, first in Egypt and Mesopotamia and now all over the world.

How it works?

The clear inner leaf gel of Aloe vera has been shown to reduce gastrointestinal inflammation and has shown preliminary evidence of benefit in people with inflammatory Bowel Disease. Aloe has also been shown to improve general gastrointestinal health reducing bad bacteria and bowel putrefaction and improving gastrointestinal motility ,digestion and absorption.
